It’s very quiet in Aquinnah, and throughout the Island this week. Most people are away for the vacation. There are some benefits to being here this week: There is no wait at Five Corners or the intersection of the Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road. You can pretty much drive from one end of the Island to the other without touching the brakes. It’s a nice time to relax and get ready to prepare for the summer. It’s now March, and in Vineyard time that means that July is just around the corner.
At the library this week: Come in today, Thursday, March 1, at 3 pm to play board games. Story Time is also today at 3:30 pm, and on Saturday, March 3, at 10:30 am. Kids’ Craft is on Saturday at 11 am; come in and make a raccoon collage. The Afterschool Club meets on Tuesday at 4 pm. At 5 pm on Tuesday, there will be a Kid’s Dinner and a Movie.
Pathways will be closed until March 4. It will reopen Tuesday, March 6, with “Writers Read,” hosted by Nikki Patton. On Thursday, March 8, in honor of International Women’s Day, there will be a performance titled “Women Live!” and on Friday, March 9, “We Dance!” where you can come and get your groove on. This event is being held at the Chilmark Community Center. All events at Pathways run from 7 to 9 pm, with no admission fee. There will be a new class beginning Monday, March 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm: Tung family tai chi chuan. The class is $100 for seven sessions, or $18 for a drop-in. The class will be in the traditional Yang Long form as taught by Yang Chang Fu. Pathways Living Room Studios will be open daily from 11 am to 5 pm starting on Monday, except Wednesdays and Sundays.
The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival schedule is up and online. Go to tmvff.org for tickets. It’s a great lineup, so get your tickets now. The festival will be held March 15 through 18.
Get ready for the summer restaurant season: ACE MV is offering ServSafe workshops in March and April. The cost is $179 for certification or recertification; go to acemv.org to register.
The Chilmark School Spring Fling is coming up. On Saturday, March 10, from 7 to 11 pm, you can come to the Chilmark Community Center and get some great auction items. There will be desserts and dancing to Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. Perhaps the best part is that although it’s a fundraiser for the Chilmark School PTO, it’s an adults-only party. Tickets are $25, at the door or through any Chilmark parent.
The matriarch of Aquinnah, Anne Vanderhoop, celebrated her 87th birthday surrounded by her children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren last week. Her daughter Juli made a lemon chiffon cake and a strawberry shortcake (one cake is not enough for a family as large as Anne’s). It was a joyous, noisy occasion filled with love. Happy birthday to Jo-Ann Eccher, who celebrates on March 2.
