The Gay Head 10K is just around the corner; if you plan on running it, make sure you register at runsignup.com. There is a limit of 500 runners. The race begins at 10:30 am on Sunday, Oct. 7. The proceeds go to supporting the upkeep of the Gay Head Lighthouse. This is such a fun town event (disclaimer: I don’t run, I just stand on the sidelines and cheer, so when I say “fun” I’m speaking purely as a spectator), so runners, sign up now.
Things will be closing soon up-Island, but most places will be open for the next couple of weeks. The Aquinnah Shop is serving lunch today and Friday from noon to 3 pm, and breakfast on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 to 11 am. This Sunday will be their last day. The Outermost Inn will close Columbus Day weekend, as will Cliffhangers. The last dinner service at Chilmark Tavern is Sunday, Oct. 7. So get it while you can, folks, because there won’t be more until next May. As a consolation, the Derby is still going until Oct. 13, and the Orange Peel Bakery will continue pizza night on Wednesdays from 5 to 8 pm while the weather holds. Plus, the Pandora’s Box 50 percent off sale will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 5 pm.
At the Aquinnah Public Library this week, Story Time is on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Saturday at 10:30 am. Kids’ Craft is on Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm; you can come in and make a funny octopus. The homework club meets on Tuesday at 4 pm.
Aquinnah resident Philip Weinstein started a new class series on Marcel Proust this week as part of the “Islanders Read the Classics” series sponsored by the Vineyard Haven Library. The classes are free and open to the public, and held at the Katharine Cornell Theater. The next class will be Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 pm. The class will discuss the “Combray” and “Place Names: The Name” sections of “Swann’s Way.” The class meets every two weeks. For a full schedule, go to vhlibrary.org.
The Featherstone “Art of Chocolate Festival” will take place on Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend from noon to 4 pm each day.
The 28th annual Martha’s Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14. It’s a six-mile walk that begins and ends at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven. The walk will be held in honor of Alden Besse, who founded and led the M.V. Hunger Walk for 25 years. Besse passed away in December of last year. The walk will also honor the work of Betty Burton for her 20 years of service in the fight to end hunger on the Island.
