First the good news: On the Cliffs is having its annual 50-percent-off sale this Friday at 4 pm. Ladies, come on up; they have some beautiful things for fall, and refreshments will be served. They are open through the month of October, weather permitting. The bad news: The Aquinnah Shop has closed for the season. They did a tremendous job this year; every time I went I had a great meal with excellent service. I hope all the staff gets some well-deserved rest. The Chilmark Store has also closed until next May. The Outermost Inn, Cliffhangers, and the Chilmark Tavern will all be closed after this weekend. Thank you to all the chefs, counter people, servers, managers, and owners for a wonderful season.
There has been some change at the Aquinnah Public Library recently. Jennifer Burkin, who was in charge of the children’s programming, moved to Brookline about one month ago. Thank you, Jen, for your creative programming; we will miss you. Rosa Parker, our acting library director, is currently interviewing replacements. Angie Waldron, who experienced two strokes during the summer, has returned to her position at the library in a limited way, but it is nice to see her whenever she is there. Rosa just returned from a trip to Iceland, which she said was beautiful but cold. While she was away, Elissa Turnball filled in for her. Hopefully Rosa will find a talented replacement for Jennifer soon.
At the library this week: Story Time is on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Saturday at 10:30 am, Kids’ Craft is on Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm, and the Afterschool Homework Club is on Tuesday at 4 pm. The next meeting of the book group will be on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2 pm to discuss “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin.
On Sunday, Oct. 7, Cristina Montoya and the Oak Bluffs library will welcome Marcelo Galvao from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. He will speak about his culture and teach a samba class. This event is free and open to anyone, regardless of dance ability. It is recommended that you wear clothes you can move in and bring extra water. This class will give you life!
Spa Tharpe and his fiancé, Anja May, threw a wonderful 60th birthday party for Spa this past Saturday evening. Friends and neighbors gathered and brought food to help Spa ring in a new decade.
There will be a Halloween Costume Swap and Social at the West Tisbury School, outside on Friday, Oct. 12, from 2:45 to 3:45 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be a costume drop box outside the office at the school starting on Oct. 9. You can also bring your old costumes to the event. If you find a costume you, or any of your children, like, you can take it with you for no charge. There will be cider, apples, and doughnuts available for purchase (bring your own reusable cup for a discount on cider). For more information, email silva.mc@hotmail.com.
