Hinckley warehouse razed

Two excavators went to work demolishing the old Hinckley warehouse in Vineyard Haven Tuesday morning. The excavators could be seen grabbing huge chunks of the wooden structure. As the work began to kick up dust, a hose was trained on the debris. By 3 pm, 90 percent of the warehouse was flattened.

The site is slated for a large workforce housing development managed by Mike Sawyer. No plans for the mixed-use development have been filed, as it’s still in the planning stages.

The property, which was sold in August to Larkin “Barry” Reeves for $2.3 million, is located on 1.61 acres across Beach Road from the DeSorcy property, which is on the market for $8 million.

The Island Tactical Team and the fire departments of Tisbury and Oak Bluffs had the opportunity to drill in the vacant structure last week ahead of the demolition.

A whale sculpture that was on the Hinckley property for years was moved ahead of Tuesday’s demolition.
