Chilmark: Valentine’s Day already

Margot Datz arrives with two finished works to hang in the Chilmark library children’s room. — Valerie Sonnenthal

Valentine’s Day already! Yes, and the bad news I overheard from a friend at Cronig’s has now spread Island-wide: Chilmark Chocolates will close at the end of 2019. OK, I forgot to mention extra chocolate shopping days last week, but if you’re hankering for their chocolate, you can shop through Sunday, Feb. 17, when they close for a break. Photographer of stars Guy Webster, a former Menemsha summer regular, passed away at 79. There are obits in Rolling Stone and Variety, besides an L.A. Times story three years ago after he suffered a debilitating stroke and sold off his collection of antique motorcycles. You may recall his photographs adorning the main hall in our hospital, if you want to take a look.

Here’s some good news: Colin Ruel has finished his commission to paint Rena and Ozzie Fischer to hang at the Ag Hall, and it’s a stunning homage. Congratulations to the Yard on receiving a Doris Duke Charitable Trust award of $350,000, an amazing gift for the organization and the Island. The next Chilmark Potluck is Saturday, Feb. 16, starting around 6:30 pm; bring a dish to share.

This week the M.V. Chamber of Commerce is collecting kids’ juice boxes, baby food, pet food, toiletries, warm coats, and more for the Island Food Pantry and Clothes to Go. Drop off items between 9 am and 5 pm through Valentine’s Day at 24 Beach St. in Vineyard Haven.

The Chilmark Community Church’s Community Suppers are on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, all ages welcome. 9 Menemsha Crossroads, Chilmark. For further information, call 508-645-3100.

Pathways Arts offers free shuttle service from down-Island to all evening events. Meet at the Edgartown side of the parking area at the high school near the road. The van (Stagecoach Taxi) will leave at 6:15 pm and return at 9 pm. Call Pathways at 508-645-9098 or the taxi at 508-627-2516 for pickup.

Do you still need a Valentine’s gift? Stop by Pathways Arts at the Chilmark Tavern between noon and 3 pm on Thursday, Feb. 14, and check out Joan Lelacheur’s wampum and Susan Shea’s art cards. In the evening, bring your date, your family, friend, or come solo to “Sing for Love,” with 14 Island musicians including Jemima James, Isaac Taylor, Tim Laursen, Lydia Fischer, and Missis Biskis, among others. On Friday, Feb. 15,  come hear “Projects in the Works,” an evening of new seed projects: artist talks, music, literary arts by Island artists, writers and musicians Graham Smith, Sam Low, Paul Lazes, Sam Low, Andy Herr, Lucy Mayhew, Milo Silva, Bruce MacNelly, John O’Toole, and Richard Limber. Stop by for “Meditative Sound Saturday,” Feb. 16 from 5 to 6 pm; enter in silence and enjoy a listening experience and sound meditation. Sit, stand, or bring a mat and come lie down. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, come hear the Peter H. Luce Play Readers perform “The Glass Mendacity,” a farcical romp with a laugh-aloud combination of three of Tennessee Williams’ most famous plays, “The Glass Menagerie,” “Streetcar Named Desire” and “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” It takes place in Belle Reve, home of the wildly dysfunctional Dubois family, as each member attempts to lie, cheat, and swindle each other out of Big Daddy’s fortune. Stop by from 11 am to 5 pm every day except Wednesday and Sunday to see the exhibition by artists Harry Seymour and Nygel Jones, through Feb. 28. Every Saturday at 3 pm, join Alison Cameron Parry for a weekly All-Ages Qi Gong; for more info write or call 508-397-1743; $15 suggested donation (livestream also available). Doors open at 6:30 pm, and events begin at 7 pm, free for all evening programs.
