Heard on Main Street: Listen: to understand, not to win.
There will be a special quilt display at the Oak Bluffs library from May 1 through 31. This treat is the Joan Glodis Quilt and Craftworks Retrospective. A closing reception and celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Saturday, May 25, from noon to 3 pm.
Many of you knew Joan when she lived here. Some of us were lucky enough to meet Joan Glodis on her visits back to the Island. Her family has gathered these quilts to share them with all of us.
Note that the Vineyard Haven library is now open six days each week: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 10 to 5:30, Tuesday and Thursday 10 to 8, and Friday from 1 to 5:30 pm.
And you may want to take advantage of the fact that the new Martha’s Vineyard Museum is now open late every Tuesday, until 8 pm.
Get free tickets for “The Public” online at the M.V. Film Society, or in person at the Vineyard Haven library for the showing at the Film Center at 7:30 pm on Sunday, May 5. The movie begins with an act of civil disobedience that turns into a police standoff when homeless people take over the Cincinnati Public Library to seek shelter from the bitter cold. The program is sponsored by the M.V. Library Association and the Film Society.
Spring wasn’t much nicer off-Island last week, though I enjoyed a delightful time with grandchildren and their activities, including coloring Easter eggs. It is always fun to enter a small part of the kids’ lives. I find it easy to be happy when I visit, because they always make me feel very welcome.
Remember that the M.V. Greenhouse already has pansies and some plants available. Keep in mind the annual fundraiser Plant Sale that begins May 11 at 10 am, and runs all summer.
The M.V. Library Association offers a Genealogy course from 1 to 3 pm on three Mondays in May. The classes will be led by Dr. David Martin of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society. The first session, “General Introduction to Genealogy,” is scheduled for May 6 at the West Tisbury library. “Immigration and Migration for Genealogists” is May 13 at the Edgartown library. “Using the Census for Genealogical Research” will be May 20 at the Vineyard Haven library.
Sandy says her daffies are appreciating all that rain. They’re now all smiling up at the sky. And lilacs, roses, and those cute little blue flowers with the white star inside are all ready to bloom.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Alexandra Habekost. Happy birthday on Sunday to Jessica Soleil, Ronnie Tolin, Melanie Jane Dickson. John McCarthy parties on Monday. Best wishes to Doug Hewson and Andrew Williamson on Tuesday. Wednesday belongs to Ellie Williamson.
Heard on Main Street: Bless these April showers, promising the dandelions of summer.
