Edgartown: Life is starting to slow down

Island life is starting to slow down, and Labor Day is upon us. What do you think? Was it busier than usual, quieter than usual, or about the same? I actually thought July was fairly quiet, after the Fourth of July week. August seemed pretty busy, though. Overall, I wasn’t super-frustrated by traffic or the grocery store, but I also think I tried hard to avoid those things. But I also didn’t have trouble getting parking at the beach or elsewhere. And yet the restaurant was always busy. So I honestly can’t figure out whether this summer was busy or not. I do know that going back into school and a regular schedule seems like a well-known friend right about now, so that’s a good thing.

Sunday, Sept. 1, will be the last Sunday for summer hours for the Federated Church, with a short service at 8 am, and a full, regular service at 9:30 am. Beginning Sunday, Sept. 8, there will be one regular service, starting at 10:30 am with the Rev. Dr. Charlotte Wright. Music is provided by the Federated Church Choir, under the direction of Peter R. Boak, minister of music. For more information, please call 508-627-4421, email officefederatedchurchmv@gmail.com, or visit their website at federatedchurchmv.org.

Back-to-school jitters must be starting to raise their heads with kids these days. I still get them at the start of the year. Kids always think it’s funny when I share that with them, but it’s true. But I’m certainly looking forward to seeing all of the kids.

Edgartown School families should mark their calendars for September for the Open House, Health Fair, and Garden Celebration on Sept. 11 from 6 to 8 pm. This is an annual event, complete with a potluck dinner, where the whole family can enjoy some food in the cafeteria and then tour the school and garden, while also getting some useful information from the health fair. It’s always a fun night, so make sure you come join us.

It’s been a quiet news week, and I’ve got the summer cold and cough that seems to be going around. Ugh. It seems way too soon to be getting sick, but maybe that means I won’t get a cold in late September or early October like I normally do. At any rate, I’m going to cut this short. Have a great long weekend. I hope you get to relax a bit after a busy summer.
