School’s out and summer’s in; farmers markets twice weekly, flea market twice weekly, farm stands filled with seasonal bounty, flower stands bursting with color. Good news this week is the Chilmark library finally has a new website.

The field of dreams, Flanders Field, may have laid dormant last summer, but the 2021 softball season gets underway on July 4, an official opening day starting with the dedication of a player’s bench honoring Tony Horowitz commissioned by his wife Geraldine Brooks, who will throw out the first pitch. The national anthem will be sung by longtime pinch baserunner Sophie Balaban. All are invited including town officials, dignitaries, and players from the past and players of the future. Games begin at 8am.

Happy 19th anniversary to Jim Feiner and Deb Dunn. Cybele Benton McCormick celebrated her birthday on Saturday, June 26, and smartly closed Menemsha Deli for the day. Birthday wishes also go out to Linda Thompson.

Congratulations to Sig Van Raan (a Flanders Field softball regular) and Susan Dickler who, along with friends and family, enjoyed the backyard wedding of their daughter Sofia at their West Tisbury home. Sofia and her husband, Zachariah Murray, are spending their honeymoon at their Menemsha family cottage.

Dan Waters shared that the M.V. Museum is looking to complete their collection of Island phone books prior to 1975. If you happen to have any odd phone directories that you’re willing to donate, please contact Dan or Bow Van Riper (MVM librarian) at the museum. Thank you!
