I can’t believe June is winding down and the Fourth of July is just next week. Time is flying by. I’ve been to the beach three times so far, which is only a few times less than I went all of last summer. I’m loving it.
The Beach BeFrienders have shared their summer beach cleanup schedule, so mark your calendars. June 29 is in Aquinnah, July 27 is in Chilmark (Lucy Vincent, Squibnocket, and Menemsha), August 24 is in Edgartown at Lighthouse Beach, Fuller Street, and Wilson’s Landing, and Sept. 28 is at Lambert’s Cove, Long Point, and Cedar Tree Neck in West Tisbury. All cleanups are from 8 to 10 am.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the filming of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” shot in 1974 on location all over the Vineyard to bring to life the fictional Amity Island. To celebrate, the Edgartown Board of Trade is hosting events throughout the weekend as part of Amity Week. The Edgartown library is partnering with a photo scan-a-thon to capture and archive photos taken during the movie’s filming, in order to share “Jaws” history with the public. Bring your photographs to the library anytime between 10 am and 5 pm on June 27, 28, and 29, and they will scan them into a central database that will document this significant cinematic period in island history. This program is presented in collaboration with the Edgartown Board of Trade.
Want to make your own ice cream this summer? The Trustees FARM Institute is hosting Ice Cream Making on the Farm on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3 to 4 pm. Participants will tackle every step of the process of making ice cream, from mixing the cream and sugar to churning the base, and will come away with a sweet reward for their hard work. Tickets are $20 for individuals, $40 for an adult/child pair, and you can purchase tickets at thetrustees.org.
Jean Stone will be at Edgartown Books on July 4, from 12 to 2 pm to sign her book, “Up-Island Harbor.” It sounds like a good book to add to your summer reading list.
Enjoy the Edgartown Fourth of July parade, and fireworks show at the Edgartown Lighthouse and harbor. The festivities begin at 5 pm with the parade, and the fireworks start at dusk.
There will be an American Tribute Concert at the Old Whaling Church at 6:30 pm on July 4, featuring the Singing Trooper Dan Clark and vocalist Mary Colarusso. All are welcome.
Keep the Independence Day celebrations going all night long with Town Bar and Grill’s Fourth of July bash, starting at 5 pm. They’ll have DJ Kelly Hinds from 5 to 8 pm, and reggae with DJ Dallaz and DJ D Dub from 9 pm to midnight.
That does it for this week. We’re about to hit the height of summer, so remember to leave early to get places, have patience, and be nice. It helps. Have a safe and festive Fourth of July week.
