“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” —Alfred Wainwright, long-distance walker and author of guidebooks

Time to layer on the suitable clothing! It seems winter didn’t think we were taking her seriously enough, and decided to make a bigger statement. Hope Island kids are enjoying the snow and frozen ponds; it does seem so magical when you are young. And young at heart!

The Valentine Pop-Up Shop at Mo’s last weekend was really fun, with great Island artists going all out with beautiful displays and gorgeous wares. The delicious mulligatawny soup from Mo’s, along with Sherrie’s special Bloody Mary buffet, made for a lovely winter afternoon shared with friends.

If you missed the shop, there are Valentine offerings everywhere. Donaroma’s has a beautiful display going on, rivaling its Christmas show, and Tony’s Market is offering flowers of every hue and sweet treats of all kinds. Be sure to shower the people you love with love — including yourself!

The library will help with “Valentine’s Card Making” on Friday from 10:30 to 4 pm. Drop in for all ages; use provided materials to make your own creations. On Saturday, they will be decorating cookies, it’s drop-in for ages 3 to 14.

If you need help with taxes (who doesn’t?), the library is hosting the AARP Tax Aide Program, in partnership with the O.B. Council on Aging. This program is free, and will take place from 10 am to 3 pm. But taxpayers must sign up with the Senior Center, fill out a questionnaire, and bring a copy of last year’s tax return. Call Rose to register, 508-693-4509.

Our Meals on Wheels program is in need of more drivers. If you can spare a couple of hours per week to help drive meals to people in our community who are unable to get out, or maybe recovering from a recent surgery, it would be so appreciated. Each driver is asked to drive only one route per week, and it usually takes an hour or two. I have met the nicest people driving meals; it has truly enriched my life. Call the office if you are interested: 508-693-4393. Use the same number if you know someone who could benefit from meal delivery.

Sending birthday love to Albert Fischer on Feb. 13. Celebrating Valentine’s Day birthdays are two people with very big hearts: Ray Whitaker and Caroline Derrig. Febr. 14 is also the day that Frederick Douglass chose to celebrate his birthday, as his mother called him her “Little Valentine.”

Birthday hugs go to Donna Hopson and Kate Hennigan on the 15th! They share the day with Smokey Robinson. Lukas Olender blows out THREE candles on Feb. 16. Kathy Farrissey and Bella Morais also celebrate on the 16th, have a great day ladies!

Jane Cecilio and Garrison Viera share their birthdays on the 17th. Sing Happy Birthday to Kendall Robinson and Carrie Tankard on February 18, and also thinking of Joel Rebello, who is so missed. Happy Birthday to Brian Packish on the 19th, he shares the day with Griffin Kuhn.
