Chilmark

The weekend weather was glorious. The water is warm, and the parking lot at Lucy’s filled.

It is sweet to have the gate open and dogs welcome. Most folks are responsible and pick up the poop, but it is important to look around before you settle down.

It is nice to see so many clusters of friends enjoying time together.

When the news came that Jane Goodall died peacefully in her sleep, I remembered she wanted to be a poet laureate and a naturalist, and it was her friend, Dr. Leakey, who helped her channel her interests and become the world-renowned ethnologist, conservationist, and humanitarian.

Goodall’s poetic wisdom inspires us to channel and blossom.

The Old Wisdom

When the night wind makes the pine trees creak
And the pale clouds glide across the dark sky,
Go out my child, go out and seek
Your soul: The Eternal I.

For all the grasses rustling at your feet
And every flaming star that glitters high
Above you, close up and meet
In you: The Eternal I.

Yes, my child, go out into the world; walk slow
And silent, comprehending all, and by and by
Your soul, the Universe, will know
Itself: the Eternal I.

The Chilmark Store is open from 8 am to 6 pm; and its last day of the season will be Saturday, Oct. 11.

Tuesday at 6 pm is Pizza Night at the Chilmark Church.

The Chilmark library is accepting donations of recent and nearly new books in excellent condition. You can drop them off at the desk while the library is open. Please don’t leave anything on the benches. The sale is in December, and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library.

On Oct. 8, at 4 pm, the Chilmark library hosts a community poetry reading hosted by the Island’s current poet laureate, Claudia Taylor. The event features M.V. poets Eleanor Bates, Christine Burke, Amarylis Douglas, Peter Ledderman, Ann Lees, Clark Meyers, Donald Nitchie, Leslie Prosterman, Susan Puciul, Fran Schumer, Ron Slate, and Michael West.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of “The Sea Table,” and check out Brook Bartletta’s portraits and the fabulous recipes and stories.

Gabbi Camilleri, Nov. 9, 1961 – Sept. 15, 2025, left too soon, and was a bright light. We are invited to come as we gather to remember and celebrate a life well-lived on Sunday, Nov. 2, 3 to 7 pm, at the M.V. Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. We are invited to bring a dish to share, a happy memory, or a funny story. If you would like to play a song or two, please contact Naomi at music@nomes.net.

This weekend on Oct. 11 is Ladyfest M.V. in Oak Bluffs’ Waban-Alley Park, from 2 to 9 pm. The lineup of performers and vendors is terrific, and the event benefits Connect to End Violence.
