This time of year Chilmark’s roads yield stunning views — swaths of red, orange, yellow, brown, and green; fall color at its peak, fields and slanted sunshine scattering sparkles across the sea and sound.
Sometimes, the sun turns slowly falling leaves to gold. Somewhere between a golden snow squall and a cascading waterfall. Moments filled with delight that push away the ordinary and usual, and invite the imagination.
What if the time before seasonal goodbyes was filled with enough moments to carry you until they return? “Such friendships are the hard work of truth and tenderness, sustained by an unfaltering commitment to showing up, a promise of absolute sincerity, and a quality of presence that leaves each aglow with the sense of being treasured.” –Alain de Botton
Why does it feel like a vacation when things slow down, and there is time to stretch things out and give conversations and tasks your full attention?
Happy Birthday Week wishes to Katie Carroll. Thank you for your presence and treasuring so many.
The Chilmark firefighters will host the children-in-costumes parade and offer a slice of pizza and cup of cider, Friday, Oct. 31, at the Chilmark Community Center from 5 to 5:45 pm. Don’t forget to trick-or-treat along the crossroad before heading to Menemsha. We will be across from the Chilmark Church, and Julie Flanders will be at the end of her driveway. I expect to see Margaret Maida handing out treats by Iggy’s. Here’s hoping the weather is nice enough.
Chief Jeremy Bradshaw, congratulations on your retirement, and thank you for leading the Chilmark Fire Department so well.

I was wrong about the location of the League of Women Voters ink-cartridge dropoff in Chilmark. The box is on the floor, just inside the front door of the town hall, not the library.
North Tabor Farm reports they have hakeuri turnips, watermelon, radishes, purple green beans, baby, romaine, lettuce, baby bok choy, beautiful carrots, scrumptious, honeynut and acorn squash, North Tabor Farm (ugly but delicious) apples, shiitake mushrooms, herbs, and more prepared foods coming out daily. There are even a few pints of sweet, vine-ripened cherry tomatoes.
Emily Broderick reports that a dozen Chilmark church members helped at the Martha’s Vineyard CROP Walk last Sunday afternoon. Some walked the three-mile trek, and some helped register the 150-plus walkers from the Island. CROP Walk chairperson Woody Bowman awarded Phil Deitrich a framed award for his 56 years of involvement.
