Martha Mosher Child was born in Oak Bluffs. She was the daughter of Gary S. Mosher and Helen (Medeiros) Mosher, formerly of Vineyard Haven. Martha grew up in Vineyard Haven and attended Island schools; she was a 13th-generation Island native.
She graduated from Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in 1974. Educated as a musician, she studied several instruments, including piano, pipe organ, violin, and flute.
At the age of 15, she began playing as organist at the Old Whaling Church, then began her career as an organist and choir director at the United Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church. She also sang in musical groups around the Island.
Continuing a family tradition as a member of the Vineyard Haven Band, she played flute for more than 54 years. Beginning in 2011, Martha led a ukelele group that brought joy to countless Islanders.
She had a love of photography, another Mosher family legacy. She enjoyed art and writing, as well as music.
Martha was predeceased by her beloved husband, John W. Child. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Lori-Ann Child of Spring City, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Amy and her husband Ray Goodwin of Onset; and stepson, Thomas F. Child and his wife Celene Wong of Brookline. She is also survived by five step-grandchildren, many cousins, and dear friends.
A graveside service will be held for Martha on May 16 at 11:00 am at Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven.
