Heard on Main Street: Why do they call it the Department of the Interior when they are in charge of everything outdoors?
I am currently reading a book called “Thanksgiving Blessing: An Amish Holiday Novel,” by Marta Perry. I enjoy Amish stories; though pure fiction, their lives seem so full of attention to the details of the simple things we enjoy in all our lives.
I only recently discovered that my nephew is suffering from a condition called aphasia. A person may have challenges talking, understanding others, reading, writing, and using numbers. It has also affected him physically, and he requires considerable healthcare. I am so very sorry, especially because I cannot think of anything more awful. He worked as a coach and athletic director for his local high school, and was always very active.
He and his wife came to see me during COVID. I had trouble recognizing him — we both wore masks. We sat out on the deck and had a lovely visit. When he was very young, I was there while his parents were ill. One morning he sweetly made me peanut butter toast for breakfast. These memories are very painful now.

Heard on Main Street: These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter … I go somewhere to get something, and then wonder what I’m here after.
