Heard on Main Street: Why is lemon juice mostly artificial ingredients, but dishwashing liquid contains real lemons?

Sunshine and blue sky are always cheering, but I do not remember noticing the expanding minutes of daylight as I am this year.

While looking for news this morning, I was delighted to read that if you want to boost your memory, eat berries. Flavonoids, compounds found in berries like grapes, and dark chocolate, have been shown to improve memory and reasoning skills. Nice to have the experts tell me good things like this.

It was also a treat to know that the M.V. Film Center is offering the Metropolitan Opera Live with “Cinderella” on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, at 1 pm. Be sure to mark your new calendars.

The Vineyard Haven library invites adults and teens 13 and up to make Heart Handwarmers on Sunday, Feb. 1, at 11 am at the Tisbury EMS Building.

There will be off-season local music and dancing on Sunday, Feb. 1, from 4 to 5 pm at the Stephens Chapel Unitarian Church, 538 Main St., with live music by the Jaywalkers Duo, Barbara and Jessie.

The Vineyard Haven library offers Open Mic Nights at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, upstairs at 51 Spring St., at 6 pm Tuesdays, Feb. 3, and March 3, and 17. Sign up on arrival, free, open to all.

The library will welcome the Tristan Israel Band for an evening of mainly original tunes written by Tristan Israel in true Americana style, with roots in folk, rock, blues, and even some jazz. This will be on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, upstairs at 51 Spring St.. Free.

If you like reading and sharing ideas about science and nature, join the library’s Science and Nature book group, now reading “The Secret Life of Lobsters.” They meet at 3 pm on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss nonfiction books about science and nature. Register.

The library’s annual foreign policy reading and discussion group, “Great Decisions,” begins in February and meets for eight Wednesday evenings at 6 pm. Meetings are in the Tisbury EMS building meeting room, with a Zoom option available. “Great Decisions” is America’s largest discussion program on world affairs, providing the opportunity to learn about and discuss in a thoughtful and courteous manner some of the most critical global issues facing America today. Register.
