A 63-year-old Edgartown man who was found at the Steamship Authority’s (SSA) Woods Hole terminal unconscious died in Falmouth Hospital Wednesday.

Geoff Spillane, SSA spokesperson, said there was a “medical emergency” before the 6 am ferry departure to the Vineyard Wednesday morning. He said the Falmouth Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene but didn’t have additional information.

Falmouth Police Lt. Ryan Hergt said first responders were dispatched to a call about the man, who was “on the ground next to a vehicle” at around 5:26 am.

“It does appear the male was waiting to board the first ferry of the day when the incident occurred,” Hergt said in a statement.

Hergt said medics “initiated life-saving measures and transported him to Falmouth Hospital,” which is just under 5 miles away. The man was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

According to Hergt, a police investigation, “including interviews with witnesses and a review of surveillance footage,” determined that there was no foul play. Falmouth Police didn’t disclose the individual’s identity or what the medical emergency was.
