Summer Street Upholstery, a design studio, is opening in Edgartown and will be replacing Needleworks at 12 N. Summer Street.

The showroom hopes to give Edgartown clients a downtown location to meet, select fabrics, and discuss custom projects, which can include upholstery, slipcovers, headboards, and ottomans. (The company’s workroom is not located onsite.)

“I’m excited to share our process and capabilities with the Edgartown community in a space that truly reflects our approach to design and craftsmanship,” owner Becky Langis said in a press release.

Becky and her husband DJ Langis are longtime summer residents in Edgartown and said the new studio allows them to better serve clients on Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. Becky Langis, who began her career in finance before turning a family sewing hobby into a business, draws on multigenerational traditions of craftsmanship in her work.

“I’m fortunate to come from a family of creative women,” she said in the press release.

Her grandmother, who she called Babci, was what would now be considered a bespoke tailor or dressmaker. She crafted coats, dresses, and suits on her dining room table in Upstate New York, Langis said. “As children, we spent hours cutting patterns and sewing our own creations, while my mother and grandmother sewed beautiful garments, often speaking Polish, so we wouldn’t understand the gossip! My mother is a talented sewist and accomplished artist, and I like to think I’m following in her footsteps.”

The studio is currency open by appointment only. For consultations, call 203-313-5980, email summerstreetupholstery@gmail.com, or visit the website
