“Behind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begins.” –Mitch Albom
Here is your official reminder: Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 10.
Most of the time, mothers get taken for granted. They work behind the scenes, hoping to give their children what they need. They don’t do it for applause, they don’t want any spotlight on them. Most of the time they are winging it and hoping for the best!
That is why we need Mother’s Day, so there could be one day when the spotlight IS on the moms, and they will accept accolades and gifts. So don’t miss this chance to thank your mom. If your mom is no longer with us, just set aside some time to feel grateful for her, and do what she would like the most for you — be happy.
All moms need to laugh! Lucky for us, the Strand will be hosting two comedy shows over the weekend. Friday it is “An Evening of Comedy with Susan Rice” at 7:30 pm, and Sunday features Ophira Eisenberg, at 7 pm. Both of these veteran comedians are smart, relatable, and hilarious. The shows are part of a weekend-long event being presented by Circuit Arts called “No Bones: A Comedy Festival of Humerous Proportions.” Check out the schedule at circuitarts.org.
Returning home from vacation is never easy, but it is certainly easier when home is this Island! After being away for 12 days, just feeling the ferry pull away from Woods Hole toward home brings such comfort. I’m still not used to the sight of the new ferry terminal, though. And you have to pay attention, as they move the cars from one staging area to the next. I just read that the terminal will open in June. Maybe when it is open and active, it will look better?
The MVRHS Minnesingers have returned from their performance tour in Italy, and are ready to share their talents with the community this weekend with their annual sSpring show. These shows are always so much fun, showcasing the choir and individual performances. Shows are at the PAC on Saturday, May 9, at 7 pm, and Sunday, May 10, at 2 pm. Tickets at the door are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students.
The Community Greenhouse on New York Avenue opens the season with its annual Plant Sale over Mother’s Day weekend. They will be open Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 3 pm, selling organic vegetables and herbs, perennials, and annual flowers. You can become a member while you’re there, or even sign up to join the awesome volunteer team that keeps the greenhouse green.
Sing “Happy Birthday” to Don Groover on May 7! Diane Sylvia celebrates on May 9; she shares the day with Jamie Boyle. On the 10th we say happy birthday to Richie Smith, and we remember the unforgettable Primo Lombardi. We send birthday wishes to Primo Jr. on the 11th! Shirley Washington celebrates her day on the 12th, and we remember Marion Cardoza.
