Five people, including two minors, were hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash on Edgartown–West Tisbury Road Tuesday afternoon.
Edgartown Police responded to the crash at around 4:26 pm. While investigations are ongoing, preliminary findings by Edgartown Police indicate a possible mechanical issue that caused a gray Volkswagen Passat to veer into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision. A gray GMC Terrain took the brunt of the damage in the collision, and a third car was then hit by the Passat, a Toyota Sienna that was exiting Old Purchase Road onto Edgartown–West Tisbury Road.
All five individuals were transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Their conditions were not immediately released.
Edgartown Police Sgt. Bill Bishop said in a statement that the driver who caused the accident will be cited and charged, pending the completion of investigations.
Edgartown–West Tisbury Road was closed or partially restricted from the time of the response until about 5 pm.
“The Edgartown Police Department would like to thank the Dukes County Communication Center, the Edgartown Fire Department, and ambulance crews from Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, and Tri-Town for their assistance,” Bishop said in a statement to The Times.
