It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene Bergeron Jr., known to most as Gene, Geno, Dad, Grandpa, and friend. On June 2, surrounded by the love of his family, Gene left this world and entered into the presence of the Lord. While our hearts ache beyond words, we find comfort knowing he is finally at peace, free from pain, and resting in the arms of God.
Gene was a man defined by unwavering faith, quiet strength, and a heart bigger than anyone could describe. Diagnosed with cancer at just 19 years old, he spent much of his life facing health challenges that would have broken most people. Yet time and time again, he fought his way through them. His beloved wife Beverly often joked that he was like Houdini — always finding a way to come out the other side. Through every battle, Gene trusted God, remained determined, and never gave up.
Above all else, Gene loved God, his family, and this Island.
He shared a beautiful love story with his wife Beverly, who had been by his side since they were 15 years old. Through every season of life, they were inseparable. If you saw one, you knew the other wasn’t far behind. Whether fishing, tending flowers, driving around the Island, or simply enjoying life’s simple pleasures together, they found joy in being side by side.
Gene was the most incredible father, grandfather, husband, and friend. His love for his children was unmatched, and his family was always his greatest source of pride and joy. He showed that love not only through words but through sacrifice, hard work, and unwavering support.
Anyone who knew Gene knew he was one of the greatest storytellers you would ever meet. He could spend hours sharing stories of growing up on Martha’s Vineyard, working the land, fishing the waters, and building a life rooted in family and community. His stories carried wisdom, humor, and lessons that connected generations.
For more than 40 years, Gene dedicated himself to Cranberry Acres, and spent a lifetime caring for the land he loved. As a gifted landscaper, woodsman, and builder, his work can be seen throughout Martha’s Vineyard — from Blue Heron Farm to the Agricultural Hall, and countless homes, farms, and fields in between. His legacy will continue through his son, who now carries on the landscaping business Gene built with his own hands.
His presence can still be felt everywhere on this Island — in every freshly cut lawn, every sunflower and dahlia blooming, every field he cared for, every tree he trimmed, and every life he touched. Everywhere you go, you can see the mark Gene left behind.
Gene loved life’s simple pleasures: time on the water, cheering on his grandchildren from the stands, tending flowers with Bev, helping a neighbor in need, and sharing stories with friends. His home and heart were always open. He never hesitated to lend a hand, offer guidance, or make someone feel welcome.
Above all, Gene will be remembered for his faith, generosity, resilience, humility, and enormous heart. He leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, hard work, and devotion to family that will continue for generations.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; his children, Mary, Gene, and Sarah; his cherished grandchildren, Joseph and Ava; his extended family members, Ashley, Jon, and Tim; and countless friends and loved ones who were blessed to know him and will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
A burial was held on June 8 at the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown. He was laid to rest beside his mother-in-law, Mary Jackson.
In honor of Gene, we ask that you spread a little kindness, lend a helping hand, tell a good story, and take a moment to appreciate the simple things in life — because that’s exactly how he lived.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” –Matthew 25:23
