Everyone Deserves a Beach Day

Going to the beach may not be possible for everyone, but everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy it. At some point in life, many people experience changes in mobility or physical ability that can affect the activities they once loved. For Islanders, beaches are more than destinations; they are part of lifelong memories, traditions, and community connections.

Many Martha’s Vineyard residents grew up exploring the shoreline, swimming, fishing, and searching for treasures in the sand. Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard (HAMV) recognizes the importance of ensuring beaches remain accessible to people of all abilities and at every stage of life.

Over the past year, efforts have been made to identify and highlight beaches with improved accessibility features, including wheelchair access points and designated parking. Community members are also encouraged to support continued accessibility improvements to help make the Island’s shoreline welcome to everyone.

Most Accessible Beaches in 2026

Bend in the Road Beach, Edgartown

This section of Joseph Sylvia State Beach includes two accessible parking spaces located beside the beach pathway and bike racks. The spaces are marked on the pavement, although accessible parking signs are not currently present.

Lucy Vincent Beach, Chilmark

Access to Lucy Vincent Beach is limited to Chilmark residents with a beach sticker. The beach parking lot includes four designated accessible parking spaces. Two of the spaces were recently relocated to improve accessibility.

Owen Park Beach, Vineyard Haven

Owen Park Beach offers two designated accessible parking spaces within its 25-space parking lot, providing easier access for visitors with mobility needs.
