You may have noticed signs on many businesses throughout the Island that state “All Are Welcome Here.” These are posted thanks to the work of volunteers from the MV 4A group. On Thursday, July 9, you have a chance to learn how to join them in keeping those who live on M.V. safe from unregulated raids. The MV 4A group is sponsoring a free class where you will learn how to invite businesses to know their rights, know how to safely respond if needed, and post that sign. The training takes place at the West Tisbury library on Thursday, July 9, at 1 pm. You can RSVP to the mv4aproject@proton.me.

Also on Thursday, remember that the Aquinnah Flea Market happens from 10 am to 4 pm at the Baptist Church. I dropped by on their first day last week, and while the atmosphere was wonderful, with good music and picnic tables and a steady stream of customers, there were only a few vendors. If you are interested in displaying and selling goods, you really should contact Pastor Mike at 508-560-4726. It’s a great opportunity.

On Saturday, July 11, from 2 to 4 pm, you’re invited to attend the opening of the Aquinnah Cultural Center’s Reading Room. Families, friends, and community members of all ages are invited to explore the Reading Room, get creative, and connect through storytelling, art, and learning. During the event, you’ll also get a chance to create zines, with all materials provided. Snacks and drinks will also be available. The event is free.

At 7 pm on Wednesday, July 15, two veterans of the Chilmark Community Center camp are coming back to the Chilmark Community Center to share their adult work. The author Daniela Gerson will be in conversation about her debut memoir, “The Wanderers,” with documentary filmmaker David Modigliani. This event is being sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Author Series, and you can purchase advance tickets at eventbrite.com.

I’ll remind you of this again next week, but you should save the date for the annual Native Artisan Market and Festival on Saturday, July 18. Held from 11 am until 4 pm at the Aquinnah Circle, the event is free and open to all. Aquila will be the food vendor for the day, and the Wampanoag Nations Singers and Dancers will lead everyone in social songs and dance. The invited native artists will have wonderful items on display and for sale. It’s a terrific day that promises to be good for your eyes and your soul. Thanks to the Aquinnah Cultural Center for making it possible.

The Aquinnah Library Book of the month is “Whistler” by Ann Patchett. Go and check the book out, read it, and be ready to come to the Library Book Group discussion later this month. Also, be sure to bring your children by the library to sign up for the Summer Reading Program. FYI, the Aquinnah library is looking for a program coordinator/library associate. It’s a part-time job that offers a great opportunity for a computer-savvy someone who loves libraries and our town. If you’re interested, go by the library and talk about it with the staff, or visit this link for more information: aquinnahlibrary.org/employment-opportunities.

Birthday greetings this week go on July 15 to the silver-voiced, gentle, and brilliantly minded Tobias Vanderhoop.

PS: If you’re wondering who won the trophy for best entry in the Fourth of July parade, it went to Isaac Taylor with his beautiful Matador Red, ’56 Chevy 6400 truck.
