I took my own advice, and made it to the beach once again! It may mark just a few trips so far, but really nothing beats an early-evening beach visit. Complete with Wicked Burgers (and milkshakes) from Edgartown, we headed to State Beach for the perfect start to the weekend. As August inches ever closer, one week at a time, these moments seem even more valuable.
Last week I was able to sit in on a very exciting meeting that took place at Featherstone Center for the Arts: the art selection for the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District (VHHCD) Pocketed Pole Flag initiative! Back in March, the VHHCD received permission from the Tisbury Select Board to create new pole flag “banners” all around Main Street that feature 16 pieces created by Martha’s Vineyard artists. This is a big step for the visibility of our cultural district, and although this project has been delayed a bit, we are almost to the final steps of beautifying our downtown harbor! Shout-out to everyone who submitted to, supported, and made this project happen. I will definitely update again when these are installed around town.
In other news, so many events are happening these days that with a 500-word max, only so many can be shouted out. But here’s my personal list of “if I could go, these sound amazing” events in our town:
Circuit Arts and the M.V. Playhouse continue to juggle organizing a gazillion cool things this season. I’m currently obsessed with their exhibit “Scale and Perspective” (now through July 25), featuring handcrafted miniatures from Anna Fitch and Banker White alongside pastel paintings by Neva Savath Goldstein. In my enthusiasm I accidentally visited this show twice before it officially opened, and witnessed Anna and Banker painting a huge backdrop onsite to pair with their miniature town.
July 22 to 25, Theatre on the Blue is performing “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” at the Katharine Cornell Theater. With only six (super-talented) local teen actors playing dozens of characters, enjoy this mix of theater, puppetry, and local artist collaborations before they head to Edinburgh to represent our community at the world-renowned Fringe Festival in August.
July 25 at 8:30 pm marks “Light Up the Lagoon,” organized by the Lagoon Pond Association, with an evening boat parade lit up along the water and attendees encouraged to participate and watch the parade from the drawbridge or Beach Road: Bring your own lights and lanterns, as this event shines light on the importance of the Lagoon Pond waterway and its ongoing health for our community.
July 27 through August 1 is the 12th annual Martha’s Vineyard Documentary Week at the M.V. Film Center, with six nights of awardwinning films, special guest speakers, director Q and As, and more.
