To the Editor:
The proposed Katama Meadows subdivision with its 52 new lots, 26 of which are large luxury homes of 4,000 square feet, will do irreparable harm to the low-lying outwash plains of Edgartown, increasing nitrogen pollution in the Great Pond and ruining the delicate environment for harvesting shellfish.
Also, the clearing of 28 acres of forest means losing 1,500 tons of carbon storage — a huge carbon footprint that goes against the Martha’s Vineyard Commission’s Climate Action Plan, adopted four years ago.
We don’t need more housing for the ultra-wealthy who don’t understand the true value of the land for the lives of the people who live here.
This is a dangerous trend that could be railroaded in with huge effect on our community and delicate environment, already under siege by corporations seeking profit at any local cost.
Please attend the final meeting on July 30 at 6:30 pm at the commission to respectfully (and silently) show your concern.
