Late August is lovely. The water is warm, and at Native Earth Teaching Farm, Rebecca Gilbert’s vat of indigo is available to refresh dishcloths, pillowcases, skirts, and dresses. Indigo on a brown dress became a lovely green.
The Yard announced Sarah Glazer Khedouri and Fred Khedouri have generously pledged to match up to $25,000 raised through donations from a community of friends, students, dancers, and patrons through Sept. 15th.

The Yard was founded in Chilmark in 1973. It is a place where artists from around the globe create, perform, and offer classes to the community, and go out into the libraries, museums, pop-up venues on farms, and senior centers through paid residencies. After their summer season, in November and March, they offer creation residencies with guest artists, and host workshops in the Island schools. Their works of art spread joy and foster community, creativity, and healing.
Classes continue at the Yard this week, and next week, August 31 – Sept. 4, 10:45 am – noon, Naomi Goldberg offers Modern Dance for Life, a class open to all abilities. It is described as a beginning Modern Dance class with a warmup based on various standing and gentle exercises, a floor section with Pilates and yoga-influenced moves, with an easy gratitude ending. It’s $15 a class, cash/check/Venmo, no preregistration required.
Dance inspired the large 10- by 4-foot painting by Harriet Bernstein on display at the Chilmark library. It was created during a monthlong retreat at the Vermont Studio Center in 2022 after losing dance studio space for her weekly improvisational dance activity. She hoped to dance with big brooms as paintbrushes and see what happened. The brooms never manifested, but the large painting emerged, mark by mark, into a cornucopia of pink. This is the first time the painting will be on display, along with her other works. Let’s fill the room and hear the story at her reception, Saturday, Sept. 5, at 3 pm.

Congratulations to Irene Wong, guest chef extraordinaire at North Tabor Farm, on her food travel series “On the Road,” streaming on Netflix. Nothing is as wonderful as eating her food, but this is a delicious and feel-good show. Tuesday, Sept. 1, is North Tabor Farm’s Rebecca Miller’s birthday. It’s also the last Chilmark Church Lobster Roll sale, 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
Sig Van Raan was away this week, but reports co-commissioner Caleb pitched for both sides of a high-spirited game. It was well-attended, with the usual aplomb for home runs and defense.
Save the date for a celebration of life for Dr. Tim Guiney at 3 pm on Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury. Tim died on Sept. 12, 2025, at the age of 85.
