Rumor has it summer actually ends on Sept. 22, and I absolutely understand all the hospitality and service staff wanting to speed this month up. I continue to applaud you for putting in these insane hours; it’s admirable, and here’s to hoping you get the rest you deserve by September. Late August is an interesting time for a columnist, where there isn’t much happening, but it’s the turning point, and everyone can feel it. School starts back up this week, and that’s who my second round of applause goes to — the parents scrambling to get their kids ready for school: You are the true heroes of the week. It’s also the quiet moment before the Derby starts, but soon enough headquarters will be covered in sponsor signage, and the big prize will be rolled into the Edgartown Harbor parking lot. And talking about parking, I think it’s one of the first things the locals reclaim — slowly but surely, your parking spots come back into play, and you won’t have to circle Main Street and its side streets countless times.
Depending on what your week looks like, here are some notable moments that I suggest make it onto your late August calendar:
Stop by MV Botiga and visit the latest pop-up, the Open Door Club by Sanctuaire, happening through August 29 at 15 Church St. Its hours for the final days are 12 to 8 pm, and you’ll find fragrance, hospitality, and cultural storytelling all in one. Come for a scent discovery and a celebration of legacy on Martha’s Vineyard.
If you’re free on Thursday, August 27, I urge you to check out the fun time that is trivia at Indigo, starting at 8 pm. A group of friends and I joined in on the fun last week, and let me tell you, we had a blast. Believe it or not, it was also my first time playing trivia, and I even had some right answers! We didn’t win, but we enjoyed ourselves — eating delicious Indian food, chatting with friends, putting our heads together trying to recall information we last thought about in high school. It’s led by Ryan and Dough, also known as Brews Brothers Taproom Trivia, and they do a great job keeping the trivia questions fun and interesting! Ryan also informed me that he hosts karaoke night at Indigo on Wednesdays from 8 to 10 pm. I’m not sure I’m ready to sing for a crowd, but if you’re into that, now you know.
On August 31 from 8 to 10 am, join the Martha’s Vineyard Bird Club for an August Birding 101 walk at the boat landing off Braley’s Way and Sheriff’s Meadow Sanctuary. It’s perfect if you’re curious about birding, or looking to build confidence in the field. Bring your binoculars! Don’t have any? I called the Edgartown library, and Caroline at the front desk informed me that they have a pair in their Library of Things that you can check out!
Happy belated birthday (August 19) to Capt. Joe Uva — one of the kindest smiles in Edgartown, with the greatest sea legs!
