“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” Robin Williams, 1951–2014

We’re almost to the finish line of summer! The calendar gives us another week before Labor Day, kind of a summer bonus.

The August full moon, the “Sturgeon Moon,” is technically on Friday, August 28, but if Thursday night is clear, we may be able to see the lunar eclipse. Look up at around 9:30 pm to see the moon turn very red as it passes through the Earth’s shadow. If you miss that, you can still howl at the full moon on Friday night!

There will be an important meeting for Oak Bluffs residents on Monday, August 31. The Copeland Board will hold a public meeting at 5 pm to consider the Oceanview Hotel proposal. Many people are concerned about the design of the project and the impact on surrounding neighborhoods. This may be the last opportunity for the public to be heard about this hotel project. The meeting will be held at the Town Hall, and a Zoom link is available on the town website.

The Oak Bluffs Open Market continues on Sundays through mid-October. From 10 am to 2 pm in Washington Park (above the harbor, across from Our Market), the market offers a variety of local and specialty foods, flowers, and artisans, with live music.

Friday Sunset Concert Series on the lawn at the Tabernacle features the Dock Dance Band on August 28, 6 to 7:30 pm. Lots of other activities continue at the MVCMA into September. On Tuesday mornings, it’s Pilates under the tent at 8 am with Judy, and on Friday mornings, it’s Yoga at 8 am with Lorrane. Check out the calendar at mvcma.org.

Featherstone is wrapping up its music series this week, with a special performance of the Delanie Pickering Band on Thursday, August 27, followed by the last Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish concert on Friday, August 28. Then get your tie-dye ready for the Grateful Dread on Monday, August 31. The music starts at 6 pm. It’s been so awesome to enjoy such great music in a beautiful outdoor setting; thanks to Ann Smith and her incredible staff for this summer gift!

Happy birthday to Jean Dupon on August 27! Anne Whiting celebrates her day on the 28th; she shares the date with Chris Alley. Billie Hancock blows out her candles on August 29, and we remember my friend Tom Rancich on that day also. August 30 is a big day for birthdays, celebrating Pam Melrose, Ashley Girard, Jennifer Fiore, Danielle Albert, and Justin Oslyn. Nancy Giordano and Chuck Wiley celebrate on August 31.

September birthdays start off with a bang: The fabulous Karen Trotier celebrates on Sept. 1, along with Anne Davey. The mayor of Oak Bluffs and ambassador of smiles, Eddie Ben David, will give and receive birthday hugs on Sept. 2. Miss Xena Clark also celebrates on the 2nd by turning 6 years old!

Stay kind out there, and send me your news!
