Taylor fact: I’m a bit of a homebody. Especially when the weather is so darned hot and muggy, it is a feat to get me out of the house more than necessary. But this last week, with a couple of friends visiting, I feel like I experienced a taste of what it might be like if I was vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard: checking off an almost-Obama sighting in town, a beach day, an El Barco margarita, a pizza from Gio’s, and of course a Mad Martha’s ice cream trip included.
On Sunday, my partner and I made it to the final concert in Owen Park by the Vineyard Haven Band. Starting at 7:30 pm means practically bedtime for us, but we committed, and were joined by quite the group of fellow music lovers. I always hope they will play some “Les Misérables” (my dad raised me to be quite the fan), so appreciated their rendition of “Bring Him Home.” The audience received a thank-you from the conductor, boasting that we outnumbered the usual Oak Bluffs turnout.
A few days later, we tried out Steere the Course Mini Golf and Grille. All 18 greens have been redone, and are redesigned with fun local spins on each hole. If you are a hole-in-one aficionado, note they no longer have you draw a ball for a prize, as they brainstorm their own special celebratory something for those lucky mini-golfers.
Next week marks our next First Friday VH event in town on Sept. 4, and the final day to grab a lobster roll with your name on it from Grace Church. I am also bubbling with excitement, as the pole flag project I’ve been working on with the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District since March is coming to its end! All 16 new flags have been selected, approved, ordered, and received as of last week, and should be going up around downtown Vineyard Haven any day now.
An event honoring the late Harold Chapdelaine will be held at the Tashmoo Spring Building on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 4:30 pm. Passing in 2022, Harold left his mark on our town, chairing both the Williams Street Historic Commission and the Tisbury School Building Committee. His name is now inscribed on the memorial bench at the Tashmoo Spring property, commemorating those who worked on the committee to restore this historic building.
The Vineyard Haven Public Library is pleased to announce a monthly Open Mic Night in collaboration with the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District. After the closing of Island Music and an interim relocation to the Katharine Cornell Theater, Open Mic Nights will now be held in the library’s new Community Room at 6 pm on the third Thursday of the month, beginning Sept. 17th.
