Kevin Foster left us too soon. The fact that he died a hero’s death in no way mitigates the pain or the sense of loss.
If I may, let me briefly share a memory with you. I had the privilege of teaching Kevin high school history years ago, back in his home state of Arkansas. Sadly, the racial divide was still pronounced in our part of the world … It still is. African American and white cultures existed side by side in our school, but there was a huge gap between the two, a gap that was very difficult to bridge. Efforts to do so often carried a social price, often the loss of friendships. Kevin managed to bridge that gap as well as any student I can remember. And, at least so far as I was able to determine, he did it without betraying his core political beliefs, which he held very strongly.
Kevin left a lot of friends from his high school years feeling a deep sense of loss … friends of both races. Count me among them.
