“We had this time.” September is a gift that comes with the exquisite tension of gratitude, for moments when the phone rang and friends announced they were here, for when events and invitations competed with all the demands of life, and for the desire for time to pause.
Now the chances of one-on-one connection increase. The water is warm, the sunlight no longer searing, the daytime temperature warm and the evenings cool enough for a sweater.
Heather Goff has more of her cheerful mugs for sale in the Island Folk Potter store, 16 Marion’s Way, Chilmark. It’s open Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm, and from 2 to 5 pm on Sundays.
School started this week, and last weekend, sharks were spotted off Lucy Vincent Beach; shark-shaped signs warned swimmers “Shark in area.” Yes, here in the water. It could be dangerous.
Sept. 15, the beaches will reopen for beach walks and romps with the dog.
Friday is Rosh Hoshanah. Wishing my Jewish family and friends a good and sweet New Year. May we all appreciate the gifts and responsibilities that come with being human so that in the end our memory is a blessing.
We have lost two more men who blessed us with opinions and talents. They stood tall, enjoyed the Island landscape and community, didn’t mince words when they had something to say, and honed their skills. Thank you, Steve Mack, for perfecting the audio at so many live and recorded events, and for the times you spoke up. Thank you, Colin Ruel, for painting Steve.
Trip Barnes also spoke up and showed up. Among other things, he was a master auctioneer. Condolences to his family.
It is gratifying to volunteer, work hard in the summer, and earn. Thank you to all who bought lobster rolls on Tuesdays from the Chilmark Community Church. Thank you, Emily Broderick, for leading the exceptional team of volunteers.
Thank you to all who bought treasures from the vendors at the Chilmark Flea Market, and thanks to Annette Anthony for the many hours of thought and work that go into preparing for and managing the market for the vendors. Thank you, Marie Wise, for doing all of the work to have a Chilmark Church booth offering donated treasures. It is not easy organizing, pricing, setting up and taking down, and reconciling funds. Thank you on behalf of the Chilmark Community Church.
Come to the Chilmark library Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1 to 3 pm, and help the generous and wise trio of Laurisa Rich, Layne Wheeler, and Cathy Walthers set the agenda for fall and winter foraging and fermenting classes, and make a simple fermented soda using local honey and fruit.
