Last week, the traditional first week for the fourth and fifth graders at the Chilmark School sailing trip on the Shenandoah was her final voyage. She was joined by a parade of sails from Menemsha to Tarpaulin Cove on Naushon, and back to Vineyard Haven Harbor. Thank you, Lynne Whiting, for starting this tradition in 1992.

Jules grew up on the Vineyard, found love with Emily Madsen in Vermont, moved to Montana, and now lives in Portland, Maine. He is never too far from North Road in Chilmark! Nancy Huntington Nitchie died on Sept. 7. She was a beloved friend who made us laugh, captivated us with stories, and generously shared flowers and bulbs. Holding her beloved family, Donald Nitchie, Beth Parker, Emily, Billy Jake, and Delilah Meegan, Sofia Nitchie, Tucker and Nigel Smith, and, of course, great-grandson Silvio, in the light. I encourage you to read her fine obit in this paper.
Congratulations to Sarah Carr (40-49) and Gabby Carr (20-28) on running fast and winning your age group in the 24th annual NAACP George V. Tankard Jr. Memorial 5K Road Race/Walk.
Jay Lageman was a delightful human. His sculptures capture happiness, and it is hard to accept the news that he died on Sept. 9 after a long illness. Deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends.
On his website, lageman.com, you can watch videos and read Jay’s “View”: an artist’s look at life. His sculptures are unmistable. His bronze “Swordfish Harpooner” commands attention from the dunes of Menemsha.

Alison Convery died in her sleep on Friday, Sept. 18. Services will be at 10 am on Friday, Sept. 25, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal, on the corner of Winter St. and North Summer St. in Edgartown. The reception starts at noon in the Baylies room of the Whaling Church.
