I hate to start by talking about the weather, because it always seems to be filler material, but we’ve had just spectacular weather after that crazy storm. Crisp, fall days with bright sunlight that’s giving me life! I’m sure the Island farmers are appreciating this weather, which reminds me that I recently read the September donation totals from Slough Farm, as of Sept. 22: 103 dozen eggs, 335 pounds of meat, and 2,638 pounds of produce to 10 different partner organizations! Not only that, but my personal interactions with them remind me that Slough Farm truly creates space for people to connect through shared work, learning, and celebration — the farm becomes a welcoming place where community grows alongside the fields. I’ve felt this firsthand anytime I am there. Make sure to sign up to its newsletters to stay in the know about what’s happening and coming up.

As the Edgartown town columnist, I’m tasked with sharing events in and about the town. But there are events that take place in other towns that I feel necessary to share, especially one as important as this one: The M.V. Cancer Support Group Brunch Under the Tent event is happening Oct. 24 at Farm Neck Golf Club, from 10 am to 12:30 pm. This group does incredible work for cancer patients, survivors, their families, friends, and caregivers, and this event is their fundraiser to support that work. You can buy tickets ($150 each) online at mvcancersupport.org.

Fall is the best time of year, and another event coming up this weekend is the annual Martha’s Vineyard Brunch Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8 am, presented by the MV Classic Series. This race offers a One-Miler (for ages 14 and under only), as well as 5K and 10K USATF-sanctioned courses, which are flat and fast, and the 10K course runs along scenic Atlantic Drive, right by the ocean. This unique and exciting event includes a postrace brunch and refreshing beverages presented by sponsors. All participants will receive a long-sleeve T shirt and custom commemorative brunch glass, guaranteed for the first 225 registrants. Medals will be awarded to the first-place finisher in each race category. Proceeds from this race will not only support the Edgartown Board of Trade, but now as a part of the MV Classic Series, race benefit local youth charities. It seems that the Derby flew by, as this is the last week — it ends at 9 pm on Saturday, Oct 17, with the awards ceremony the following day. Good luck to all anglers out there still competing to get on the leaderboard! If you’re not an angler and still want to support this incredible Island nonprofit, make sure to head down to the headquarters on Dock Street and purchase merchandise (hats, sweatshirts, and more), as proceeds go toward the Derby scholarship fund.

Sending birthday wishes to Bryan McShea on Oct. 19 and Mary Morano on Oct. 21, two incredible community members. If you see them out and about, make sure to wish them a happy birthday! And a reminder, send me your news, updates, and more at marnely@gmail.com, I can’t wait to read you. Oh, and don’t forget to stop by Morning Glory Farm for its pumpkin festival on the 17th, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. See you there!
