“October is the treasure of the year, and all the months pay bounty to her store.” –Paul Laurence Dunbar
It’s time to VOTE. Early voting for the November election begins on Oct. 17.
In Oak Bluffs, we can vote at the town hall from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday, starting on Oct. 19 through Oct. 30, plus two Saturdays: Oct. 17 and 24, also 9 am to 4 pm.
Voting information and support for voting will be provided at the No Kings: Vote Early rally on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 1 to 2 pm at Five Corners. “In America, the people choose their leaders,” says Carla Cooper of Indivisible MV, one of the sponsors of the rally along with other local organizations. Voting early will help avoid any chaos or confusion on Voting Day, which is Nov. 3. I may vote early this year, as much as I love voting day in Oak Bluffs.
“Climate Conversations,” sponsored by town climate and energy committees, will present a panel discussion on “Community Lessons from the 2026 Blizzards” on Saturday, Oct. 17. Discussion will be at the West Tisbury Library from 3 to 5 pm.
Oct. 18 is party day on the harbor for Lawrence Jackson, who is retiring from Coop de Ville after 33 years, with music on the boat at 2 pm by the Mike Benjamin Band. The annual Pig Roast will be Sunday, Oct. 25, with Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish on the boat. The good news is that Petey has announced that he is NOT retiring, and will be back next year for Coop’s 41st year: I think that might make Coop de Ville one of the longest-running, still-operating restaurants on the Vineyard. Not bad for a couple of ragged young fishermen who liked to cook!
The M.V. Agricultural Society’s annual Harvest Festival is Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Agricultural Hall. This favorite fall event runs from 10 am to 2 pm, and the schedule is filled with fun activities and exhibitions for all ages, including pumpkin carving, cider-pressing, a pie-eating contest, hay maze, and more. It’s free, it’s fun; don’t miss it.
While on the M.V. Ag Society website, I saw that the Barn Raisers Ball is Saturday, Nov. 7. During the day, from 10 am to 1 pm, all ages are invited to Barn Raisers Day: Come to the Ag Hall and construct your own tiny barn; materials will be provided, and prizes will be awarded! Then at 7 pm, bring a dessert to share and join the ball, featuring Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. I have learned two things about this event: Arrive hungry, as the desserts are amazing, and wear your dancing shoes.
Happy October birthdays! Colin Townes will blow out his candles on the 16th. Nina Lombardi Kiendzior celebrates on Oct. 17 — she shares her day with Ziggy Marley! Birthday hugs to Deb Hart on the 18th. Deb shares the day with Valerie Cooper and Kendra Yale. Jeannie Holenko and Saige Araujo will party on Oct. 20! Islanders Talk founder Lori Robinson Fisher is remembered on Oct. 21.
