The 26th annual scarecrow fundraiser for the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School has returned, filling Island storefronts with scarecrows inspired by beloved literary characters. This year’s theme, “literary characters,” inspired students across all grades to bring their favorite characters to life. Scarecrows this year resemble the Very Hungry Caterpillar, Pinkalicious, and Snoopy, alongside characters from “The Mouse and the Motorcycle,” “Peter Pan,” “Hilda,” “The Derpy Tiger,” and more.

“I think what makes this fundraiser so special is how much of the Island gets involved. We have businesses that participate year after year, families working together to build their scarecrows, and students who get so excited to see their creations displayed around town,” said Meaghan Lynch, assistant director of programming. “It’s a really fun way to bring the school and the larger community together while raising money for something that directly benefits our students.”

Local businesses sponsor the displays for $200 each, with all proceeds supporting student field trips and educational travel. This year, 48 scarecrows raised $9,600, and will remain on view around the Island through early November.
