“Quietness is an essential part of all awareness. In quiet times and sleepy times, a child can dwell in thoughts of his own, and in songs and stories of his own.” –Margaret Wise Brown
Memorial Day is here, I guess our quiet time is ending. This holiday gives us time to honor those who fought and died while serving in the U.S. military. The weekend also brings the official reawakening of the Island to a new summer season. Flowers are blooming, shops and restaurants are opening, it’s all happening!
The 32nd Memorial 5K Road Race to benefit Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard will take place on Sunday, May 24. You can register to run or walk online at runsignup.com, or in person in the lobby of Summercamp Hotel between 3 to 5 pm on May 23 — which is also when you can pick up your number bib and T shirt. Latecomers can register on the morning of the race from 8 to 9 am. But remember, the kids’ Fun Run starts at 9:30 am, and the 5K starts at 10 am sharp. Good luck!
Music is happening at the Strand Theater. MV Soundfest is bringing a mini-concert series to Oak Bluffs, every Thursday through June. This Thursday it is Big Weather, Peter Halperin and Gabi. Thanks to Phil daRosa for his commitment to providing quality music experiences to our community!
Speaking of music, Sundays in the Park concerts have begun! Every Sunday you can bring your chairs and picnic to Ocean Park for live music at the Bandstand from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This week it will be the soulful and fun music of John O’Toole.
Save the date for Electronic Disposal Day: May 30, from 9 am to 2 pm at MVRHS. Gather your useless electronics to safely dispose of them for a fee that benefits M.V. Community Services and the high school’s junior class.
I was sad to learn of the passing of Roland Goulart. I worked with Roland at David’s Island House when I first moved to the Island, and through the years I loved running into him and reminiscing. He was a kind, smart man with a great sense of humor. My sympathies to his family and friends.
