As I write this, it is 34° in Aquinnah, and freezing rain is falling. I am on a bus headed to Boston, and there is an inch of snow on the ground and more snow falling. The visibility is not great, and the roads are surely slippery. I don’t know why after having spent most of my life in New England, I am surprised by April snow showers. And actually I’m not that surprised — I do remember many snowfalls in April when I was a kid. I guess I’m more disappointed. I was really hoping I was done with my heavy coat and clunky winter boots, but Mother Nature had other ideas. She always wins in the end.
At the library this week: Today there is Story Time at 3:30 pm and After School Club at 4 pm. This Saturday, April 9, at 10:30, is Story Time, and from 11 am to 3 pm there will be Seed Planting outdoors. This event is weather-dependent, so hopefully the snow, frost, and freezing temperatures will be gone by then. The dinner and a movie for kids series will continue through April. The next one will be “Hotel Transylvania” on April 12 at 5 pm. There will be another on April 19.
At Pathways this Friday, April 8, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm there will be an evening of music featuring the baby grand piano. There will be many talented musicians performing, so come on by. As always, events at Pathways are free, and refreshment will be served.
The new session of Sassafras begins this Saturday. There are also two more sessions in the bird language and mentoring course: April 10 and May 15 from 10 am to 4 pm. It’s also time to start thinking about summer camp; this summer Sassafras is offering camp into August. Go to sassafrasmvy.org for all the current information.
Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard is having a community meeting on April 11 to accomplish the following: Report key findings from this past fall’s very successful Island Senior Survey; launch new working groups to address priorities identified in the survey; and hear from state representatives Tim Madden and Denise Garlick, chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs, about the state’s elder-services programs. The meeting will be held at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center from 1 to 4:30 pm; registration is from 12:30 to 1 pm.
I got word from Elise LeBovit that Cali Giglio found the bronze egg at last weekend’s egg hunt at the Duck Inn. Cali found the gold egg the past two years, so she obviously has some incredible egg-hunting skills. Neither Elise nor I recognized the kids who found the silver and gold eggs. Elise wanted to thank all the kids who painted the eggs. Thank you to Adam at Island Foods, who gave half the eggs, Mary Dacey, who made the cakes and cookies, the Orange Peel Bakery, which donated a yummy raspberry tart, and Shannon Saunderson, who filled the gift bags. Elise also wished to thank everyone who came and brought yummies. Thanks again, Elise, for another amazing event.
