Edgartown voters approved funding for a new fire station during Thursday’s annual election.
Voters approved the ballot question 380 – 120.
The current station was built in 1966 and a recent feasibility study found several deficiencies, including a lack of space. The town estimates the project to cost $21.5 million for a total rebuild on the same property.
“On behalf of the entire Edgartown Fire Department, I would like to acknowledge the amazing support that our community has shown for our new station,” fire chief Alexander Schaeffer told the times in a text message late Thursday night (the department was responding to a fire on Pennywise Path Thursday while the vote came in). “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the select board, town administrator, financial committee and finally the voters themselves. Our department is incredibly fortunate to have the town’s trust and understanding. We all look forward to creating a building that will allow us to provide the service and support that you all deserve. Our building committee will be working diligently to ensure our needs are met and that public input is considered.”
The ballot follows a overwhelming vote of approval at the Edgartown annual town meeting on Tuesday.
Also on Thursday, Edgartown voters ousted the current member of the Edgartown school committee. Kimberly Kirk lost by a slim margin to Kelly Scott, 246 – 224.

Change is good and lets see some new ideas going forward and how to bring people together instead of apart. The turf question has both sides digging their heels in and will not agree with the other. Just like Democrats and Republicans both sides are myopic in there zeal for there party and could never see the good that happens on occasion from the other side. Lets hope we can resolve the Dover amendment issue which needs to be done.
