Anthony Morris, 51, of Oak Bluffs was behind the wheel of a 2002, Audi A6 when he drove off New York Avenue and into Sunset Lake, a tidal pond adjacent to Oak Bluffs harbor, around 9:30 pm, Friday night.
Mr. Morris was not impaired or injured, Oak Bluffs Police Lieutenant Tim Williamson told The Times. Police cited Mr. Morris for negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
Mr. Morris was leaving Oak Bluffs and fell asleep behind the wheel, according to one person at the scene. At a point where the road makes a slight curve he continued straight, narrowly missing a telephone pole and ending up in the water.
Members of the Oak Bluffs dive team arrived to check the vehicle for any other occupants and helped secure a tow line so the vehicle could be pulled from the water.
