Edgartown

It’s midway through September, and I’m finally beginning to feel the slowdown. The Avakian wedding was quite the event this weekend, and as a member of the bridal party, I definitely felt the stress of the preparations. The event went off without a hitch, without a raindrop, without catastrophe of any kind, and a lovely time was had by all. The bride and groom are now off honeymooning in Aruba, and I’m sure Bob and Gail Avakian are enjoying the peace and quiet that follows such an event. Congratulations to all!

It was nice to catch up with some old Edgartown Eagles from the groom’s class who were on the Island for the festivities. Among others were Dean Golder, Max Sherman, Jeff Smadbeck, and Zach Townes. I’m sure their families were happy to have them around for a couple of days (and happy to send them back to New York, Tampa, Boston, and points beyond). I remember these guys carrying hockey bags bigger than they were as little guys, goofing off, and being boys. They may no longer fit in their hockey bags, but not much else has changed when they get together — still goofing off, still being boys.

Attention all Willoughbys! Your family reunion will take place this Saturday, Sept. 18, from 1 to 6 pm at the P-A Club. The event is potluck with a grill available. Bring pictures and pass the word. Folks from Virginia, Michigan, Connecticut, Vermont, North Carolina, Nova Scotia, and who knows where else will be attending. If you have questions, contact Linda Karako at 508-627-6063.

The Boys & Girls Club is having a first annual high tea fashion show Saturday, Sept. 18, from 3 to 6 pm. Tickets are available for purchase at the Second Hand Store. There will be silent auction items, give-aways, and a prize for best hat. For more information, call the M.V. Boys & Girls Club Second Hand Store at 508-627-5683.

Congratulations to Craig Edwards, Tom Smith, Jon Searle, and of course, my big bro, Chris Dolby, on becoming sergeants. The four were promoted early last week. I’m sure they’ll do us proud.

Susan Brown reports that daughter Cleveland Brown Miller and her husband, Kevin, welcomed a second baby boy, Andrew Judson Miller, on Thursday, Sept. 9. Andrew has an older brother, Matthew. The Millers live in Wilton, Conn. Cleveland was a classmate of mine from kindergarten through high school with whom I partook of much mischief and many an adventure. I’m excited to watch the torch passed to the next generation.

Edgartown had a visit this past week from long-time summer visitors Tom and Marita Hickey. After having been away for some time, the Hickeys felt that magnetic pull the Island has that we all can attest to and came back to check out the old stomping grounds. It was great to catch up and hear about the goings-on of their many children and grandchildren. We hope you will make a habit of these visits in the future.

I’ve had word from Lynn Ditchfield that the Adult and Community Education of M.V. (ACE-MV) will hold a Course Sampling Fair with walk-in registration September 28 at the high school as well as an additional walk-in registration session September 29 from 5:30 to 7 pm. For information, contact lynn@acemv.org, voicemail: 508-693-1033 ext 240.

Our resident Pats fans couldn’t be happier, with the season officially begun and off to a fantastic start. In addition to the usual crew, we caught the game with Captain Mike Pilkington, who hopped over for a visit this weekend from his post on Nantucket. We miss having Pilk here in Edgartown, but at least for the next couple of weeks he is only an island away. We will be hopping back his way sometime between now and Columbus Day, so Nantucket be warned.
