As my husband Rob and I entrenched ourselves inside this weekend, I began to take notice of how many things in our house came from Island businesses.
It was somewhat surprising to even me, the very price-conscious shopper that I am. While I firmly believe that you can find great items on-Island at very reasonable prices, the sheer volume in which we had was so exciting, I thought I would share some of our favorite finds with you.
Our day begins and ends in an extremely comfortable (sometimes too comfortable to get out of) sleigh bed purchased at East Chop Sleep Shop in Vineyard Haven. I remember the day they delivered it. They even took our old, extremely worn bed away, which was such a blessing. Once up, my sleepiness is washed away in the shower where I use the must-have Crema Sugar Scrub by Skins, from the Beach House (VH). Getting dressed warmly is always a snap with my cozy sweaters from Bryn Walker and Basics along with my sweatshirts from The Black Dog and Menemsha Blues, while Rob is snug in his Sun Dog outfits.
Our kitchen is well stocked with: a whistling tea kettle, flavored balsamic vinegars and oils, Shun knives, pedestal mortars, decorating supplies (I love to give decorated sugar cookies all year round), and various other must-haves from LeRoux at Home (VH). The kitchen, a hot spot in our household, is also filled with bowls (my favorite being my five-year-old measuring bowl) from Chilmark Pottery (WT), serving platters/bowls from Bramhall & Dunn (VH and Edgartown) and our daily attachments of Sigg water bottles from Brickman’s (VH) along with our travel coffee mugs from Mocha Mott’s (VH and OB). To highlight all our kitchen splendors, especially when company is coming, our vast selection of table linens with napkins from Rainy Day (VH) seems to always be in use.
We are totally prepared for the elements outside with our boots from The Green Room (VH), though I have to say Rob’s absolute favorite ones are his Double H black biker boots for when he is heading out for a casual day. His work jackets come from Trader Fred’s (VH and Edgartown) and my gloves with matching scarves are chosen from Laughing Bear or Island Alpaca (both in OB), as they are extremely cozy.
Evenings are currently spent warmly relaxing in our living room surrounded by some of our most cherished things. We stage the mood with the evening lighting of our numerous candles, with our favorites being the set of three hurricane candleholders from Bramhall & Dunn (VH) and our Past & Presents (Edg.) glass and pewter candleholders. A glance at our large pumpkin from Glassworks (WT), our husband and wife Willow Tree wooden sculpture from Sanctuary (OB) and pictures printed at Mosher Photo (VH) reminds us of our wedding this past October.
Flowers are always a plus at any time of year, and with a great husband who enjoys bringing a smile to my face with a surprise arrangement from Donaroma’s (Edgartown), I am now the proud owner of a plethora of vases in all shapes and sizes.
At night I prefer to quietly snuggle in a warm fleece throw from Vineyard Decorators (Edgartown) while Rob always wants to play a game from the Toy Box (VH) or The Lazy Frog (OB), if he is not reading his newest book from Bunch of Grapes (VH). The dogs have even gotten into the act with their matching collars and leashes by Red Dingo Australia, bought at Good Dog Goods (OB) and eating out of their bowls from the Boneyard (Edgartown).
These are just a few of our favorite Island things…what are yours?
