There really was some earth underneath all of that ice that has held us hostage for so many weeks. The warmer weather and rain managed to melt most of that white stuff (we won’t say snow out loud) so now it is much less hazardous to walk and drive.

It is still a busy time on this winter Island with many opportunities to learn something new, donate your time, or just enjoy the entertainment offerings.

Condolences to the family and friends of John Downs, who died this week. John was a son of the late Peg and Charles Downs of Oak Bluffs. His father was a former principal of the Oak Bluffs School and Island school Superintendent. John and his four brothers and one sister were all born and brought up in Oak Bluffs and graduates of the Island schools. We are so sorry.

Second-grade students at the Oak Bluffs School collected donations from each classroom everyday during Food Pantry Week for a grand total of 1,268 items. Thanks to all who donated.

Pink Shirt Day was started in 2007 by students in Canada. High school students witnessed an underclassmen being bullied because he was wearing a pink shirt and organized the wearing of pink shirts by 50 influential upperclassmen the following day. By wearing a pink shirt they pledged to commit to a bully-free life. Students are asked to join this important Island initiative sponsored by the CONNECT MVRHS Leadership Group and wear a pink shirt on February 18.

Special dates to remember at the Oak Bluffs School are: Presidents Day on February 21; winter vacation from February 28 to March 4.

We send birthday smiles to Carrie Tankard and Joel Rebello on February 18, Patti Linn the next day, Kaitlin Marchand and Rita Jeffers on February 22, and Melanie Marchand and Kristen MacLean on the 23rd.

Enjoy your week.
