Back into the real New England World of colder and unpredictable weather are many Oak Bluffs residents who enjoyed warmer and sunnier climates this past week of school vacation.

Melanie and Mike Marchand along with Matt, Kati, Abbey and Andrew spent their time on a cruise, Rita and Peter Jeffers and their children were also there. Mary Alley and son Jeremy basked in the sun at the Dominican Republic.

If you would like to bring some sunshine into your home and the lives of others, consider purchasing some daffodils at the annual sale benefiting The American Cancer Society. The pre-sale bouquets will be distributed on March 15, and on March 16 Dorothy Bangs will be selling them at Cronig’s Market. Jacquie Renear will see you at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital that same day where she will sell them outside of the Hospital Café. The sales on the 16th will start at 10 am and continue until the flowers are sold out.

The board of trustees of The Yard, Inc., announced the election of four additional trustees. They are the Honorable Colleen McMahon, Laura Roosevelt, Jennifer P. Goodale, and Deborah M. Sale.

We send condolences to the family of Bob Scott, who passed away last week. He was such a familiar face and voice at all the sporting events his sons and grandchildren took part in. How we did enjoy his company and support at those events that we attended also. We are so sorry and will miss him.

There will be a potluck celebration of the life of Arthur Cormier from 12 noon to 3 pm on Sunday, March 20, at the P-A Club. Friends and former students are encouraged to bring stories to share.

The Catholic Parish of the Good Shepherd extends an invitation to all Islanders to a retreat on the topic of forgiveness on March 11 and 12 — Friday from 7 to 8:30 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm at the Parish Center, 33 School St., Oak Bluffs (across from the Oak Bluffs Town Hall). The retreat will include a powerful film screening, inspiring presentations, fellowship, and reflection. Admission is free, and all families and adults are welcome. Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Networks sends out an invitation to a networking night on Thursday, March 10 from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Alchemy Bistro & Bar on Main Street in Edgartown. This is a free event open to all members and non-members.

The third cultural luncheon sponsored by The Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living will be held on Saturday, March 12, from noon to 2 pm at The Grill on Main in Edgartown. Kerry Alley will be the keynote speaker on the influence and contributions of the Portuguese community on Martha’s Vineyard. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased by calling Director Leslie Clapp at 508-939-9440.

ACE MV and the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore are co-sponsoring readings by favorite Island authors and ACE educators. Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven is hosting the free event from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, March 12 where authors will share a unique glimpse at new works in progress. Authors include: John Hough, Susan Klein , Nancy Aronie, Cynthia Riggs, Michael Ditchfield, Nancy Gaffney, and many others.

School is now back in session after the winter break. You may have noticed that the back door is now locked at all times. In order to keep the students and building safe, the back door will be locked at all times. All students, parents, and guests should enter the school through the main front entrance. It is also requested that all parents and guests check in the front office before walking around in the school building. Thanks for helping keep our building and students safer and secure.

An ever-popular event sponsored by the PTO is the Games Night. Mark your calendars now for Games Night on Friday, March 25. As always this event includes a gift basket raffle. Any questions, please contact Tiffany Belain at 508-693-4947.

Each month from now through April, the M.V. Museum will host a forum in one of the six Vineyard towns to gather input from residents. The Oak Bluffs forum will take place on Thursday, March 10 for all Oak Bluffs residents at the Oak Bluffs Library from 6 to 7:30 pm. Join the Museum’s curators and share your ideas. Refreshments will be provided.
