Derek Back joined the Oak Bluffs police department December 20 as the newest officer on the force.

Mr. Back, a graduate of Bridgewater State College and the Plymouth Regional Police Academy, served as a special officer in Oak Bluffs since April. He has also worked as a special officer in Tisbury.

“Officer Back has proven to be a dedicated law enforcement professional, who has made quick study of this community and the department,” chief Erik Blake wrote in a letter to the board of selectmen.

“He embraces knowledge of modern policing methods as well as understands my vision of community policing.”

Officer Back fills a position left vacant when Sgt. George Fisher retired in June.
