The entire Island paid a loving tribute to the late Oak Bluffs Fire Chief Nelson W. Amaral on Friday night and even in the midst of the snowstorm on Saturday. Friday night, firefighters from all over the Island and off Island came and stood in line for hours to show their respect for the late chief and his family. Even on Saturday, when the snow and wind blew so hard at times that visibility was zero, townspeople, Islanders and fire personnel were not kept from saying their final goodbyes. Nelson served the town well through many changes. Before pagers, radios, and when communication was only through the firehorn sounding, he ran the Department efficiently and saw it through many changes. Our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the townspeople on this loss.
