I really don’t have much to say, because really most people are not here right now. There are no parties or events happening up Island: all is quiet. One might even say boring.
There was a brief bit of sparkle with the Oscars this past weekend; go Meryl Streep! It’s always fun to see the movie stars in their gowns (I liked Emma Stone’s dress the best) congratulating themselves. My husband and I did throw a little last-minute Oscar party and I did so badly in the Oscar pool, worse than I’ve done in years. I did however pick the winning film, “The Artist.” Who knew “Hugo” would get all those awards? And it was kind of a shock that Meryl won, all those nominations and she hadn’t won since 1983 for “Sophie’s Choice.”
Speaking of movies, today, Thursday March 1 at the library you can bring your child by for a movie from 5 to 6 pm. If there are any kids in Aquinnah right now, that is, and they are not all lolling on a beach somewhere. On Tuesday, March 6, bring in your photos and scrapbook materials to put together from 5 to 6:30 pm.
And then more movies: the 12th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival is coming up! It’s set for March 16-18 at the Chilmark Community Center. Check out the schedule at tmvff.org. Albert Fischer’s son Chris is cooking the food this year and much of it will be locally sourced. Amy Miller will be baking treats and Todd Christy, whose birthday is today (Happy Birthday, Todd!), will be serving up his Chilmark Coffee. Oh. and there will be movies too, of course. I just got a little carried away thinking about all the delicious food prepared by our up-Island friends. If you would like to volunteer, the MVFF would love your help: please call Anna at 508-645-9599. I had lots of fun last year with Alex Taylor and Wendy Swolinzky both of whom volunteered.
And that’s it, I’m sure I will have more news next week when everyone gets back from their vacations, and I will be able to tell you all about Costa Rica, the Bahamas, Nicaragua, and Uganda, but right now all I can tell you is that things are really quiet around here. In case you haven’t noticed.
