The 3rd Annual Garden Tea Party and Fashion Show at Featherstone will take place on Saturday, May 12, from 2 to 4:30 pm. Come and enjoy the outdoors under the elegant tent on the grounds of Featherstone Center for the Arts. The fee is $40 per person and reservations are required. Seating will be at tables of eight and you must RSVP by May 5 by either calling Featherstone or online through TicketsMV.
Kate Feiffer’s new novel for kids, “Signed By Zelda,” has just been published by Simon & Schuster. The book is geared for children aged 8 to 12 and is a departure for Ms. Feiffer on several fronts, because it is a novel and a mystery. You can check out the video trailer, and then of course the book at youtube.com/watch?v=mg5nTFYQQa8.Another book that would be for adults, is titled, “Disaster Off Martha’s Vineyard – The Sinking of the City of Columbus.” This is Tom Dresser”s fourth book with the History Press, of Charleston, S.C. The book recounts the horrors of the shipwreck off of Gay Head in the middle of the night in January, 1884. More than 100 people drowned. He will present his book at two events in Oak Bluffs this month, speaking at the Oak Bluffs Library on Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 pm and the next day, Friday, May 18, at the Oak Bluffs Senior Center at 10 am. The public is cordially invited to both events. The book is available now at the Camp-Meeting Association Gift Shop and soon will be at the Bunch of Grapes, as well as several other local venues.
Doesn’t a pancake dinner where you do not have to do any of the cooking or cleanup sound great? Well mark your calendars for the Pancake Dinner on Friday, May 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Edgartown School cafeteria. Proceeds will benefit the 5th Grade Shenandoah Sailing Trip. The cost is $4 for students and seniors, $6 for adults, or a bargain price of $20 per family.
Vineyard Nursing Association will offer an immunization clinic in school on May 29 at 9:30 am. This is for the two shots required for 7th grade — Tetanus Booster (tdap) and the 2nd Varicella (chicken pox). If your child has had the chicken pox, this second shot is not necessary. I will not let students begin without being up to date, so talk it over with your student please. The choices are either a doctor’s office or at school. Your child must have a signed permission slip. It will be mailed to you if you sign up! Or you can drop by the school.
Erin and Michael deBettencourt have just returned from a wonderful three-day vacation in New York City. They enjoyed sightseeing, dining out and shopping and returned to the Island feeling much refreshed.Paul and Carol Marchand were here from their home in Connecticut to spend some time with their son and daughter-in-law Mike and Melanie Marchand. Although the visit was brief, they enjoyed the time spent with everyone and especially their grandchildren Mathew, Kaitlyn, Abbey, and Andrew.
Have you seen the work being done on the Dockside Inn? The grounds have been carefully re-furbished but also the interior has been completely redone. The ownership recently changed hands and the new owners are really putting a great deal of effort into making this structure as beautiful as possible.
The Oak Bluffs Open Market will be held in Washington Park this year, starting on Sunday, May 13, and run to October 28. The hours are from 10 am to 2 pm during May and June. After July 1, hours are 9 am to 1 pm. They are looking forward to a great season and already have Paul McDonald, a lobster fisherman, Bob Daniels with his great produce and many other new vendors as well as returning vendors. The final program of the year for the Martha’s Vineyard Women’s Network is called Peace and Plenty: Finding Your Path To Financial Serenity By bestselling author: Sarah Ban Breathnach. The program will take place on May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown. Susan is best known for her book “Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy.”
