Driver courtesy ends in serious motorcycle accident

A West Tisbury motorcyclist was seriously injured Thursday, May 31, in a collision with a car on Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs.

According to Oak Bluffs police, John Patterson was riding his motorcycle, a valuable antique 1926 Indian Chief model with an attached sidecar, north on Barnes Road.

Timothy Twombly was waiting to pull out of Pond View Road when another motorist, traveling south on Barnes Road, stopped and waved him out. Mr. Twombly pulled out into the roadway, and the motorcycle collided with his vehicle, according to the police report.

According to responding police officers, Mr. Patterson was unconscious when they arrived, suffering from serious injuries to his arms and face. He regained consciousness at the scene, and was transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by ambulance.

Police say their investigation showed Mr. Patterson was traveling within the speed limit, and had the right of way. Police cited Mr. Twombly for failure to yield.
