This summer and now entering its 42nd season, the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society (MVCMS) will continue to bring world-class musicians to the Vineyard.
The opening show is a free memorial concert organized in honor of the late Gretchen Feldman of Chilmark by her husband Sam Feldman and children Dene and Leigh.
Ms. Feldman, a visual artist, MVCMS supporter, and gardener died in 2008. Her paintings are currently being shown at the American Visual Arts Museum in Baltimore and some of her paintings hang in the entrance of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven.
MVCMS executive director and performer Delores Stevens was a close friend of Ms. Feldman and treasures the opportunity to play in her memory.
“Sam is a wonderful supporter of MVCMS,” Ms. Stevens said. “He sponsors a show every year. This is the second time that the show is open – free for the public. Gretchen was on our board for many, many years, and she painted covers for our programs and posters.”
Gretchen Feldman’s memorial concert features renowned musicians Timothy Fain (violin), William DeRosa (cellist), and Delores Stevens (piano). The musicians will play the works of Brahms, Haydn, Phillip Glass, and Shostakovich on July 9 at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown and July 10 at the Chilmark Community Center. Both concerts will be at 8 pm.
The MVCMS’s Summer Concert Festival brings six shows to the Island over the course of the summer. Their mission states, “We believe that live music should be accessible to all as it expands creativity, enhances intelligence and enriches the spirit.”
The Eclipse Quartet will perform the following week, July 16 at the Old Whaling Church and July 17 at the Chilmark Community Center. Both concerts will be at 8 pm. Tickets are $35 for the show and $155 for the season (five shows). Contact MVCMS at 508-696-8055 or at mvcms@vineyard.net.
