Summer soccer is back on the pitch at Veterans Park as the Vineyard Football Association opened the new season last week.

The league plays each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday through late August when the Gilbert-Hammond Cup is awarded.

After three nights of play, Monto Orthopedics, who traded in last year’s bright orange shirts for new sky blue jerseys, is the early frontrunner with three wins. Sports Haven is also unbeaten after two lopsided victories.

Tuesday night, Dr. Rocco Monto himself put the ball in the ‘ole onion bag to lead his team to a 1-0 win over MV Celtic.

In the second half of the twin bill, Sports Haven clipped Coop de Ville, 6-0. The winners have chalked up 11 goals in two games. Fabiel and Maker each scored twice, Adeildo tallied once, and the Coop had an own goal.

Thursday, July 5, Buck Reynolds racked up four goals to lead Sports Haven to a 5-0 win over MV Celtic. Douglas Vilaca scored the other goal for Sports Haven.

Monto Orthopedics won the second match of the day, 3-0, over Coop de Ville. Erly Pinheiro scored all the goals.

The contest was ill-mannered and ill-tempered. Referee and league comissioner Neal Sullivan handed out six cards in all, three of the red variety.

On opening night, July 3, Erly Pinheiro scored the lone goal as Monto edged Atlantic Football Club (AFC), 1-0.

In the nightcap, Island Cooper defeated Coop de Ville, 2-1. Tom Shockey and Dionatam Prata scored for IC. Decio Candito tallied for Coop.
