Almost half over, by the time you read this. What am I talking about? The summer, of course. Some parts have been good, but I think if I meet one more car entering a parking lot that is clearly marked exit, narrowly missing the front end of my car, I will have to hibernate until the “scary part” is over.

There will be a graveside service for John W. Mayhew with full military honors at 4 pm on Saturday, July 28, at the West Tisbury cemetery. At 5 pm a memorial service will take place at Ag Hall on Panhandle Road, followed by a potluck dinner and an old-fashioned musicale. Potluck dishes may be dropped off at Ag Hall anytime after 3 pm; remember that there is limited refrigeration and no warm-up facility. Bring your instruments! Questions to drdeb@vineyard.net.

On Thursday, July 26, at 2 pm there will be a Celebration of the Life of Helen Lamb, the founder of Camp Jabberwocky, at the Tabernacle. Come and bring your memories of this marvelous women.

At the Tabernacle on Saturday, July 28, at 7 pm is the Vineyard Sound 20th Anniversary Concert. Celebrate 20 years of wonderful a cappella singing with Vineyard Sound members, both current and alumni. Over 60 former members, in addition to the 2012 group, will be singing. Tickets ($20) are available at the MV Museum Shop, or online at www.mvcma.org, and at the door.

Family Movie Night at the Tabernacle is Tuesday, July 31, at 7 pm, when “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” will be shown. All are welcome. Free will offering. Please bring a nonperishable food donation for the Island Food Pantry.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault is the 2012 Walter Cronkite Award Recipient. Ms. Hunter-Gault has been a TV reporter for CNN and The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. She is author of the new book, “To The Mountaintop: My Journey Through the Civil Rights Movement.” The 3rd Annual Awards Ceremony is at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown on August 2. If you are interested in leadership, promoting school spirit, dance, teamwork, tumbling and all around fun, now is the time to sign up for Junior High Cheerleading! It’s not too early to plan for the sports seasons ahead at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School (MVRHS).

This year’s Della Hardman Day event, the seventh year of the program sponsored by the Town of Oak Bluffs, will be held on Saturday, July 2 at 4 pm under a tent in Ocean Park. Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, author and educator, will be the featured guest at the scholarship awards ceremony for the Essay Contest winners from MVRHS. Selectman Walter Vail will bring greetings on behalf of the Town of Oak Bluffs. A Cake Reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public and everyone is invited to attend and to “Savor the Moment,” as Della Hardman always encouraged Vineyarders to do!

The Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group has two important fundraisers in July. This weekend, July 27 –29, the Farm Neck Tennis Tournament will be held. There is a $100 entry fee. Our Oak Bluffs Library will have a special program on Thursday, August 9, at 6 pm when they present Marcus the Magician, so come and be astounded by magic. All ages are welcome.

Illumination Lantern Craft at the Library is coming up on Saturday, August 11, at 10 am, so get ready for Illumination Night by decorating your own lantern. For ages 7 and up, and there is a limit of 20 participants. Pre-registration is required.
